Going Overseas, but mainly from Taiwan to Canada or Australia?

Hey~!!
Ive got this problem... I grew up in South Africa, been living there since I was 2 years old but I'm Taiwanese so now I have duel citizenship. I have a South African passport and a Taiwanese passport. Right now I just finished high school and taking a gap half year, which means I will be staying here, Taiwan, till around July.
Ok so here now lies the problem, I heard from friends and family that I won't be able to get a VISA for Canada with my Taiwan passport because I have always been living in South Africa, so the only way is to travel to South Africa 1st then go to Canada which is a waste of money, because I have just been there!
Now is that true? Or will I be able to get a VISA? I am trying to apply a Canadian Visa with my Taiwanese passport.
I am not sure about Australia but would it be the same with Australia?

You should not apply on the Taiwanese passport since you cannot proof your ties to Taiwan. Check with the Canadian Trade Office at Taiwan whether say may be willing to assist your application.

This could be done by taking the application on your South African passport and forward it by diplomatic courier mail to the Canadian High Commission at Pretoria for official decision after the visa examination and the interview has been done at the Canadian Trade Office at Taipei.

The same procedures maybe done for Australia as well, alternately you could try to apply online through a travel agent in Taipei.
