Or must the car remain in the same state? Does it cost alot more to do this?

some companies will do this , but it does cost more. Well worth it though if you want a road trip holiday.

You need to contact a major chain like Avis - its will be expensive though.

we live in the UK & my brother lives in san francicso, last year after getting married in las vegas we drove a hire car from las vegas to san fran (same state as LA) we hired our car through airline network it was cheaper for us to hire from within uk than for my brother to hire from within usa.
hired a crysla pacifica car, mid august sat lunch to wed lunch time, two drivers, full tank of petrol (can be empty when you drop off), insurance & other bits & bobs cost us £109 with unlimited mileage. if we had gone with brothers quote one driver, no fuel, insurance etc & LIMITED mileage cost would have been $300 (£150) then first tank fuel & extra mileage cost on top, we did 1050 miles so would have been nearer $700. enjoy it. we had a fab time, took our time stopping at different places & did it in four days, three nights.

Yep but you'll need one of the bigger companies and it probably would cost a little more
